Big Ear… Big Ear… Big Ear…
By Chris Martin
I was lucky enough to be able to attend this year’s BMW Motorcycle Owners of America National Rally in St. Paul, MN. I say lucky enough because I had to get my huge “honey do” list done first, or face the wrath of my lovely wife of 23 years. Now in all fairness, I had put everything on the list off for most of the summer and kept telling her that “I’ll get to it.” Unfortunately, now she had leverage.
I was camping with a group of my friends from the area and we all rode over together. When we pulled in it was a great area at the State Fairgrounds, and things were nice and spread out. A perfect place to spend a few days with my friends while spending way too much money on things I probably didn’t need.
My first order of business was to get some earplugs. For the last year, I have been listening to my friends talk about how nuts I am for wearing the foam plugs. I have to admit that there are times when we stop and everyone has to wait while I roll them up and get them just right, that it does get a bit embarrassing. My final decision came as we were riding in. We had made our last stop and were about 85 miles away when I turned my head and some wind moved my right earplug out of position. Wind noise beating me into submission and 85 miles to go. This was the last time that was going to happen!
Looking around there were five different vendors selling earplugs. Two outside and three inside. I eliminated the guys selling the No-Noise ones right away because they were one size fits all. No more of that for me. To me, the rest looked the same, so I started asking everyone I saw with earplugs who they recommended. I kid you not, I asked just over 20 people and all but one said the same thing… Big Ear. Big Ear is comfortable… I’ve had these Big Ears for 11 years… Big Ear has the longest warranty… Big Ear has been around the longest… over and over again I heard the same thing… Big Ear. Big Ear… Big Ear… Big Ear…
So I went to the Big Ear booth, a little wary about what mind control device they had, that might put me into this cult they have created. They were busy, but things seemed to move quickly and I asked about the product. Up to 32 dB of protection. A three-year warranty. I could get regular custom plugs or custom fit stereo earbuds. Pretty cool!
They had demo units of the stereo earbuds so you could choose which electronics you wanted inside the custom earplugs. I decided that was the way to go and ordered a pair of BE-2C custom stereo ear plugs. The process was quick and they explained to me that the stereo products took a couple weeks to make. They saw my disappointment and offered to make me a free pair of custom solid earplugs to use while I wait. How cool is that?
The ride home was fantastic. When we stopped I was no longer – “that guy” – who made everyone wait in the heat. I just twisted my earplugs in and we were off. They went in the same every time and no wind noise.
I am back at home now with a new “honey do list”. I wonder if she would notice if I started wearing my custom Big Ears around the house… (www.bigearinc.com)
