How the Free Home Impression Kit Works, Step by Step

The free Big Ear home impression kit lets you make molds of your ears at your kitchen table, mail them back with a prepaid label, and have your custom earplugs or headphones built from them. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes with a helper, the kit and the return postage are free, and you are guided by a video the whole way. Here is exactly how it works, what arrives in the box, and what to do if something doesn’t go to plan.

Quick answer

  • Cost: the kit is free with your order, and so is the return label.
  • Time: it ships in 2 to 3 business days, and making the impressions takes about 10 to 15 minutes with a helper.
  • Help: a step-by-step guide and a video walk you through it.
  • Build time: 40 business days from the day your impressions reach our lab.
  • Peace of mind: if the lab can’t use an impression, we send another kit free, and every set has a 30-Day Fit Warranty.

Why do custom earplugs need an impression at all?

Every ear canal has its own shape. It bends, narrows and turns in a way that is as personal as a fingerprint. A custom earplug is built from a copy of that shape, which is why it can sit comfortably and seal well for hours.

Fit matters for more than comfort. Research from NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) found that the protection people actually get from earplugs varies widely with the shape and size of their ear canals and with the type of protector. NIOSH also notes that comfort is the key to wearing hearing protection consistently, and it lists custom-molded earplugs, made from impressions of the wearer’s ears, as one of the main styles available. An impression is simply how we capture your shape so we can build around it.

What comes in the home impression kit?

Everything you need arrives together, at room temperature and ready to use:

  • Impression silicone and a syringe to place it
  • Oto-blocks, the small foam stops that go in first
  • An ear light, so your helper can see what they are doing
  • A sample impression, so you know what a good one looks like
  • Step-by-step instructions with a QR code that opens the guided video
  • A prepaid return label

You don’t need to buy anything else. A comfortable chair, good light and a friend or family member with steady hands are all it takes.

How do you make your impressions, step by step?

Here is the whole process from order to delivery.

  1. Order your product and choose the home kit. Pick your earplugs or headphones and select the free home impression kit at checkout. The kit leaves our shop in 2 to 3 business days.
  2. Watch the video once before you start. Scan the QR code and watch it through. Knowing what comes next makes the real thing feel easy.
  3. Place the oto-block. Your helper gently places the oto-block in your ear canal with the ear light. This is the careful part: it goes in first and stops the silicone at a safe depth, protecting your eardrum.
  4. Fill the ear with silicone. Your helper fills the ear with the impression silicone using the syringe, following the video. Then you sit still and let it set.
  5. Remove and repeat. Once it has set, the impression comes out in one soft piece. Compare it with the sample, then do the other ear.
  6. Mail it back. Pack both impressions, stick on the prepaid label and drop the box in the mail. Return postage is on us.

From there, our team in the USA builds your set by hand. It takes 40 business days from the day your impressions arrive at our lab, and we keep you posted along the way.

One important note: if you have ear pain, ear tubes, recent ear surgery or another ear condition, please skip the home kit. See a professional or one of our local providers instead.

Home kit, local provider, or impressions you already have?

The home kit is the easiest route for most people, but it isn’t the only one. Here is how the three options compare.

Option Best for What it costs you
Free home impression kit Most people. No appointment, done at home in about 10 to 15 minutes. Free, including return postage
A local provider Anyone with an ear condition, or anyone who would rather have a professional do it Set by the provider
Impressions you already have People who recently had impressions taken elsewhere Just the postage to send them to us

What if something goes wrong?

Most worries come down to three questions, so here are straight answers.

What if my impression isn’t usable? Our lab checks every impression when it arrives. If one can’t be used, we send you another kit, free.

What if the finished earplugs don’t fit right? Every set comes with our 30-Day Fit Warranty. Tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will make it right.

Can someone else make my impressions? Yes. That is what the helper is for. A partner, parent or friend can do it with the video. It is much easier with a helper, because you need to sit still while the silicone sets.

Will I need new impressions for my next pair?

Often, no. We keep impressions on file for up to ten years, so a second pair can often be built from the impressions we already have. Ears do change slowly over time, though. A big weight gain or loss, or simply 7 to 10 years, can change how a pair fits. If yours need a fresh set, we’ll tell you and send a free kit. You can ask us to check your file at any time on our reorder page.

Why protecting your hearing is worth the 15 minutes

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, sounds at or below 70 A-weighted decibels are unlikely to cause hearing loss, but long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can. Wearing earplugs during loud activities is one of the steps they recommend. A pair made for your ears is one you are more likely to wear every time, and that consistency is what counts.

Frequently asked questions

Does making an impression hurt?
It should feel snug and a little strange, not painful. The silicone is soft, and the oto-block keeps it at a safe depth. If anything hurts, stop and call us.

How will I know when the silicone has set?
The video shows you what to look for, and the sample impression shows you what a finished one looks like. The whole session is usually 10 to 15 minutes.

Is the kit really free?
Yes. The kit comes with your order, and the return label is prepaid.
