Can You Hear Coworkers and Alarms While Wearing Earplugs?

Can you hear coworkers and alarms with earplugs in? Usually yes. How to pick enough protection, not too much, plus filter and custom options that help.

Yes, in most loud workplaces you can wear hearing protection and still hear your coworkers and alarms, as long as the protection matches the noise. The trick is enough protection, not the most. NIOSH suggests aiming for just enough reduction to bring what reaches your ears down to about 75–85 dBA, so speech and warning sounds still come through.

Quick answer

  • Can you still hear? Usually yes, when the protector isn’t stronger than the job needs.
  • The target: NIOSH suggests just enough reduction to land around 75–85 dBA at your ear.
  • Helpful styles: flat-attenuation filters keep voices clearer; level-dependent protectors let quiet sounds through.
  • Very loud or impact noise: NIOSH recommends earmuffs over earplugs at 100 dBA and above.
  • Our picks: The One with interchangeable filters, the Guardian Max, or the Guardian Vanquisher for the loudest jobs.

Why is it hard to hear people while wearing earplugs?

Every earplug turns down sound, and that includes the sounds you want. A review presented at an international noise congress and archived by the CDC put it simply: ordinary passive protectors “also reduce speech and other important sounds from the environment” (Brammer and colleagues, 2011).

NIOSH researchers have heard the same thing from the floor. In a paper on sound restoration protectors, they noted that workers often say that with hearing protection on they can’t understand speech or pick out warning signals (NIOSH, Sound Restoration Hearing Protection). The same paper describes the ideal device as one that protects from overexposure while still letting you communicate and recognize warnings.

That’s a fair goal, and it’s reachable. It mostly comes down to choosing the right amount of protection and the right kind.

How much protection do you need at work?

Start with how loud it is. NIOSH’s recommended limit is 85 dBA averaged over an eight-hour workday, and for each 3 dBA increase the safe time is cut in half (NIOSH, Noise-Induced Hearing Loss). NIOSH also offers a quick check: if you need to raise your voice to be heard by someone 3 feet away, the noise is often around 85 dBA, and if you have to shout, it’s likely 95 dBA or more.

OSHA lists similar signs that noise may be a problem at work, such as having to shout to a coworker an arm’s length away, or ringing in your ears when you leave (OSHA, Occupational Noise Exposure). OSHA, citing the CDC, notes that about 22 million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noise at work each year.

Then pick protection to fit. On its Provide Hearing Protection page, NIOSH says to “Avoid overprotection” and to aim for just enough reduction to bring exposure down to 75–85 dBA. A worker in 95 dBA noise needs less than one in 105 dBA. Your safety team’s noise measurements are the best starting point, and our post on what the NRR on earplugs means explains how ratings relate to real-world fit.

What happens if your earplugs block too much?

NIOSH explains that too much reduction can leave people less aware of what’s around them, and it can lead them to take their protectors out so they can hear properly. An earplug sitting in a pocket protects nobody.

So a lower rating that you wear all shift can serve you better than a higher one you keep pulling out to talk. Comfort plays into this too. A plug that feels good after hour six is one you’re more likely to leave in.

Which kinds of hearing protection help you hear speech and alarms?

NIOSH describes a few styles that can help when communication matters:

TypeHow it works (per NIOSH)Good fit for
Flat attenuationReduces sound about evenly across pitches, so voices sound more naturalJobs where people talk to each other often
Level-dependent or non-linearLets quieter sounds through and blocks loud onesNoise that comes and goes
Communication protectorsBuilt-in microphones and speakers make it easier to talk in noiseCrews who rely on radios
Double protectionEarmuffs over earplugs100 dBA and above, or impulse noise

Whichever you choose, fit decides how well it works. NIOSH calls individual fit testing the best way to check that a worker is getting the protection they need. If your workplace offers fit testing, it’s worth doing with any new protector, custom included.

How does Big Ear help you hear at work?

We hand-build custom earplugs in the USA from impressions of your own ears, so they seat the same way every time you put them in. For workers who need to hear what’s going on, here’s where we usually start:

ProductWhat it doesPrice
The OneFiltered earplug with interchangeable flat filters of 9, 15, 20, 25 or 30 dB that swap in seconds; NRR 25 dB with one filter installedStandard $224.95, Select $299.95, Premium $574.95
Guardian MaxSpecialty industrial earplug that lets you still hear the sound around you in very loud work$149.95
Guardian VanquisherSolid, semi-soft Shore A 45, NRR 37 dB for the loudest jobs$179.95

The One is handy when your day changes. Standard comes with one filter set, Select with two, and Premium with all five plus the hole plug, solid plugs, tactical piece and a case. With Select, one pair covers two noise levels, so you can use a lighter filter for the shop floor meeting and a stronger one near the presses, with no new mold needed.

The Guardian Max is built for very loud environments where you still want to hear what’s happening around you. When the noise is extreme and staying aware is less of a concern, the Vanquisher’s higher rating may be the better match. Just keep NIOSH’s overprotection advice in mind, and talk with your safety lead about the levels you work in. Our industrial hearing protection page shows the full range.

Ordering is simple. Every order includes a free Home Impression Kit that ships in 2–3 business days and takes about 10–15 minutes with a helper and a guided video, with return postage paid. If an impression can’t be used, we send a second kit free. We build your pair within 40 business days of your impressions reaching our lab, and order shipping is $10. You’re covered by our 30-Day Fit Warranty and a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects (loss isn’t covered). Custom products can’t be returned.

Frequently asked questions

Is the highest NRR always the safest choice at work?

Not always. NIOSH advises against overprotection and suggests aiming for about 75–85 dBA at the ear. Too much reduction can make it harder to hear and can tempt people to remove their protection.

Will I hear a fire alarm with earplugs in?

How well you hear an alarm depends on the noise around you and on your protection. Matching the protection to the noise, rather than maxing it out, helps. If you’re unsure, ask your safety team to check it with your protection in.

Can I wear earmuffs over custom earplugs?

Yes. NIOSH recommends double protection, earmuffs over earplugs, for noise at 100 dBA or above and for impulse noise.

My ears ring after my shift. What should I do?

OSHA lists ringing after work as a sign the noise may be a problem. Please see a doctor or audiologist for a hearing test, especially if the ringing is new or getting worse, and let your safety team know.
